Diving and powerlifting come on to the schedule on another busy day at Birmingham 2022.

Here, we pick out five things to keep an eye on.

Divers to make a splash

Opening Ceremony - Commonwealth Games: Day 0

As the swimming ends, the diving picks up the baton at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

The first medals up for grabs on Thursday are the men’s 1m springboard and women’s 10m platform.

Five-time Commonwealth champion Jack Laugher will be aiming to repeat his clean sweep of titles in the men’s springboard events at Gold Coast 2018, beginning with the 1m event.

Laugher will be up against the oldest competitor in the diving events – Australia’s former Chinese athlete Shixin Li who came out of retirement to compete at Tokyo 2020.

England’s hopes in the women’s platform are carried by Andrea Spendolini Sirieix, who won a silver and bronze at last year’s European Championships, and Lois Mae Toulson.

Time trial time

Wales’ Geraint Thomas won the men’s time trial bronze at Glasgow 2014 before opting to miss the Gold Coast race to prioritise the Tour de France.

Having finished fourth in the time trial of Le Tour this year to seal a third-place overall finish, Thomas comes to Birmingham 2022 in great form and will expect to be in the medal hunt at West Park, Wolverhampton.

Australia’s two-time world champion Rohan Dennis, who won bronze at Tokyo 2020, and England’s Fred Wright are other medal contenders.

In the women’s race, Australia’s Grace Brown is among the favourites after her fourth-placed finish in Tokyo.

India go for long jump gold

Sreeshankar Sreeshankar comes into Birmingham 2022 with the second-best jump of the season of anyone in the world – behind Switzerland’s Simon Ehammer – of 8.36m and appears the man to beat in the men’s long jump.

The Indian’s jump puts him well clear of the rest of the field in Birmingham and, if he lives up to his form, could be set for gold.

In the men’s hurdles, Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment bids to better the silver he won four years ago, while Joshua Zeller and Andrew Pozzi carry home hopes for England.

Powerlifting gold up for grabs

Opening Ceremony - Commonwealth Games: Day 0

The four Para Powerlifting gold medals available at these Games are all settled on Thursday.

Scotland’s Micky Yule arrives in Birmingham hopeful of medal success in the men’s heavyweight category on the back of a bronze at the 2020 Toyko Olympics with a best of 182kg.

England-New Zealand showdown

Cricket - Commonwealth Games: Day 5

Both England and New Zealand have eased through their Pool in the T20 Cricket and face off for the right to remain unbeaten heading into the knockout stages.

The two teams have brushed aside South Africa and Sri Lanka and will want to lay down a marker for the medal battle with victory in this one.
