FIBA underlined its commitment to sustainability by unveiling an MVP trophy produced entirely from 100% recycled materials, during the FIBA 3×3 World Tour 2023 held in Edmonton, Canada.

Designed by Sustain Awards, the trophy is constructed using sustainable methods and techniques, utilizing 100% recycled waste packaging. This approach reduces the trophy’s carbon dioxide production by 75% compared to a standard trophy, throughout the manufacturing process, including materials, packaging, and transport. The process also compensates for five tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2e), the equivalent of taking 397 cars off the road for one day.

“This trophy serves as a fitting symbol of FIBA 3×3’s dedication to reducing our carbon footprint, and we take pride in being one of the pioneers in introducing such an environmentally-friendly trophy,” said FIBA 3×3 Managing Director Alex Sanchez.

“It represents a significant step forward in FIBA 3×3’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. We share our players and fans’ concerns about the well-being of our planet, and we are confident that this eco-friendly addition to the FIBA 3×3 World Tour 2023 will be widely appreciated.”

“Our goal was to create a trophy with minimal environmental impact, while still instilling a sense of pride in the recipients. With the introduction of this exciting new MVP trophy, we believe we have achieved just that,” added Sanchez.

Sustainability is a major pillar of FIBA. In May 2022, FIBA partnered with Swiss-based watch brand Maurice Lacroix to launch the new AIKON #tide. The timepiece is made using ocean-bound upcycled plastic, an undisclosed formula, and glass fiber. The production of each watch removes 17 bottles from the ocean.

Last year, FIBA became the first basketball organization to obtain the international sustainability standard ISO 20121 for the 3×3 World Tour and FIBA 3×3 Asia Cup.

The MVP award winner at each of the FIBA 3×3 World Tour 2023 stops will be presented with this innovative new trophy.

Exciting, urban and innovative, 3×3 is inspired by several forms of streetball played worldwide and is considered the most thrilling urban sport. Steered by FIBA, games see two teams of three players face off on a basketball half-court. 3×3 made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
