Rwanda’s head coach Carlos Alós Ferrer has said facing reigning champions Senegal will be the most difficult in the group stage qualifiers of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2022.

The Amavubi were on Tuesday night drawn in Group L alongside Senegal, Benin and Mozambique before the qualifiers kick-off in May, 2022.

Ferrer who signed a one year contract last month as Rwanda’s head coach said on Wednesday that playing six games in the qualifiers is not a lot, although they must plan well with the key being the three home games.

“We already know our path to the 2023 AFCON. Now it’s time to work with enthusiasm and ambition,” said Ferrer.

Although the coach says Senegal will be the most difficult team to face in the group, he quickly adds that in football; sometimes you can never know what happens. “I trust that we shall have our chances,” adds Ferrer.

The 47-year old coach who has handled the Kazakhstan national team and AS FAR Rabat in Botola Pro League in Morocco among others says he is sure they will make the fans happy with the performances.

“We shall fight till the last game. I promise that this team will fight and compete,” added Ferrer who holds a UEFA Pro coaching license. He called on the fans to get ready to cheer the team in the home matches that will determine a lot in the campaign.

Rwanda have only played at the 2004 AFCON which was held in Tunisia. But the Amavubi have also reached the quarter final stage of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship in 2016 when they hosted and 2020 in Cameroon.
