The former heavyweight champion was honored Thursday night with the unveiling of a new statue at Resorts World in Las Vegas. The statue stands at 10 feet tall and is situated outside of Mulberry Street Pizzeria.
Tyson, one of the most iconic boxers of all-time, reigned as the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world from 1987 to 1990 delivering some of the staggering knockouts in boxing and in the early rounds of the bout.
Tyson’s boxing history making too little time than expected as he overtook the great Muhammed Ali to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history. The hard hitting puncher made this record at 20 years old in 1986. Iron Mike Tyson won his first 19 professional fights by knockout, and recording a whooping 12 of those knockouts inside the first round.
He was fast becoming the talk of town after breaking more records made by the legendary Muhammed Ali after becoming the world’s youngest heavyweight champion in history to simultaneously hold the WBC, WBA and IBF titles.
Mike Tyson finally got an ‘Iron Mike Tyson’ statue which stands at 10 feet tall and is situated outside Mulberry Street Pizzeria. While the statue featured his famous face tattoo, sculptor and owner of the Mulberry Street Pizzeria Riche Palmer has been criticized on social media for not getting Tyson’s detail right with many saying the statue looks rather like Evander Holyfield.
Mulberry Street Pizzeria in its press release said, “Mulberry Street Pizzeria owner and founder Richie Palmer is an avid boxing fan and felt that Tyson represents a prominent time in the sports world as well as Las Vegas. He thought that it was time Tyson deserved to be honored with his own statue, which is something that the Resorts World team agreed with, so they worked together to make this happen.”
Tyson in his appreciation states, “I knew Richie ever since my teenage years in New York City and we always been close and I’m a little overwhelmed. I’m pretty humbled right now.”
Iron Mike Tyson who has already been inducted into both the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame needed just one other honour and he has been given that by sculptor and owner of the Mulberry Street Pizzeria Riche Palmer in the form of his own statue.
