Women football in Ghana has not received the attention as other sports involving men and this has gone a long way to limit the capabilities of women in sports.
With the majority of focus on women’s football on the Black Queens who have not proved themselves over the years, Hasaacas Ladies have taken to show that they can represent the country any day they are called upon.
After winning the women’s league in Ghana, Hasaacas Ladies have gone on to win four (4) other trophies including the ‘First Ladies Cup’.
Hasaacas Ladies in the maiden edition of the CAF Women Champions league reached the final only to be defeated by a better side for the night, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies.
The brain behind the success of Hasaacas Ladies, Coach Yussif Basigi during an interview with Angel FM made known to the public some information never heard before.
In the interview, Coach Basigi stated,
“I have been coaching Hasaacas Ladies for 18 years. I’m the first coach of the team when was formed in June 2003. I have coached all these years without a salary. My joy is seeing a lot of young girls transforming their lives through football.
I scouted some of these girls from primary school and some are now playing professional football in Europe and building houses. That’s very rewarding for me.”
Been runners-up in the CAF Women Champions league, many assumed Hasaacas Ladies and its management would be swimming in money but Coach Basigi revealed the most shocking information saying, “There was no prize money in the CAF Women’s CL. We paid for our flight. They only gave us accommodated meals. During the tourney, we asked if there is prize money but the CAF officials told us they’ll get back to us. We’ve not heard from them again,”.
With the tournament over, we are hopeful that CAF in their bid to help strengthen women football will revisit the issue and reward Hasaacas Ladies what they duly deserve after their efforts to reach the final.
