The continental club masters, Accra Hearts of Oak started their Ghana premier league opener against newbies Basake Holy Star at the Accra Sports Stadium and surprised the supporters with a performance that does not match their ultramodern office complex nor the Pobiman centre.
Accra Hearts of Oak under the management of coach Aboubakar Ouattara has seen their form dip with close escape from relegation last season. Many supporters started asking why the Oak was signing many players and not looking at the coaching as they believed Ouattara was not going to lead the team to the promise land.
The start of the league is always the time to show your dominance and preparedness for the season ahead and Basake Holy Stars exhibited these qualities when they met Accra Hearts of Oak for their debut GPL opener.
No disrespect to Basake Holy Stars but they should have been an easy walk for the continental club masters on any day but the debutants showed they are ready for the season as they stood toe-to-toe with their seniors.
The debutants stunned Accra Hearts of Oak with a goal they fought to equalize but couldn’t. It was like being tormented in your own backyard with no means of response.
After suffering a loan goal defeat to the debutants, the supporters who went to the stadium to cheer the players on turned to boo them while they were trying to get on the team bus. The post match conference and other events after the game were all affected as the supporters were not in the mood to listen.
With the mighty Oak suffering these kinds of defeats, many have attributed the blame to the management who have watched Aboubakar Ouatara stir the affairs of the team as others continually ask for the heads of some key board management members.
As this is only the start of the league, many believe the phobian spirit will rise to pick their right spot on the league log as many have also argued it might be too late to try and fight for a top four spot
