Comoros qualified to the AFCON for the first time and have proved to be a handful for many teams that have played them including four-times AFCON champions Ghana.
After losing their opening match to Gabon and their second to Morocco, everyone ruled Comoros out and predicted a chance for Ghana to beat the newbies to seek a best-third qualification spot to progress to the next stage of the AFCON but the surprise of the tournament was far from reached.
Ghana vs Comoros was a must win for Ghana and Comoros needed a win to ensure they did not only come to the tournament to share points.
Comoros took it slow and ensured they did what was necessary irrespective of the outcome. The game started and took less than 5′ minutes to record a goal.
In the 4th minute of the opening half, El Fardou Ben Nabouhane stung Ghana for the opener that was rather needed by Ghana. It was now a hurdle to race for Ghana as they needed to net twice to stand any chance of progressing.
Things got worse for the Ghana Black Stars as they went a man down in the 25th minute. Captain fantastic Andre Morgan Dede Ayew followed a through ball which saw his lunching into an attack. With Salim Ben Boina down, VAR called the centre referee from Mali to the screens for a possible red card situation.
Things got worse from bad, Boubou Traore after visiting the screen reached for his pocket and sent Andre Morgan Ayew off the pitch.
The first half ended with Ghana trailing by a goal to nil and needed much inspiration in the second half. It didn’t look good in the second half as Comoros added their second in the 62nd minute. El Fardou Ben Nabouhane who scored the first assisted Ahmed Mogni to secure their second for the night.
For the first time in Milovan’s career, he made substitutions which almost saved him from critics. Richmond Boakye who came on as a sub pulled one back for Ghana in the 64th minute to give the Black Stars hope. Ghana who were a man down were playing as though they had a man advantage and their persistence paid off in the 77th minute as Alexander Djiku equalized for Ghana.
It was now a game to take as Ghana kept pushing for a winner which would see them place third on the table but Comoros had one last missile to unleash.
Ahmed Mogni who scored the second goal for Comoros scored his brace in the 85th minute and that was the end of the road for Ghana.
Surprisingly, Ghana who were thought to be the sleeping giants of the tournament were put into deep slumber by the ants who had not intention.
