Kenya’s Harambee Stars and Togo wound up their qualification matches for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in winning notes, Kenya beating Rwanda 2-1 in Nairobi while Togo picked a 1-0 victory away to Namibia.
In Nairobi, without a win in their past five group matches, Kenya finished on a high with Michael Olunga and Richard Odada scoring in the first half. Olivier Niyonzima scored Rwanda’s lone goal but they couldn’t finish off the comeback.
Olunga broke the deadlock for Kenya in the third minute of the game with a well taken volley from inside the box after Abdallah Hassan nodded the ball down for him.
The lanky striker who has scored all Kenya’s three goals in the qualification matches came close with another shot that was tuned behind for a corner by the keeper.
Kenya got the second goal though in the 16th minute from the penalty spot Odada converting after Erick Ouma had been fouled by the keeper.
In the second half, Rwanda came back stronger and they halved the deficit in the 65th minute when Niyonzima connected from a freekick.
Meanwhile in Namibia, Meme Placca scored with two minutes left as Togo picked their second win of the qualifiers. Namibia had earlier lost a great opportunity to lead when Peter Shalulile missed from the penalty spot.
