Malta Guinness WPL: Title race down to the wire as six teams’ gun for top spot in Northern Zone

The race for the top spot in the Northern Zone will go down to the wire as six of the ten Premier League clubs are all gunning for the top accolade as zonal champions. Defending champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies who are top of the table hosts Ashtown Ladies at Ohene Ameyaw Park. The Nanama need a win to topple second placed Pearl Pia Ladies who have a home game against rivals Northern Ladies at the Aliu Maham stadium. The other four contenders are Dreamz Ladies (27), Supreme Ladies (26), Ashtown Ladies (26) and Northern Ladies (26) – separated by ONLY one point.

FABULOUS LADIES VRS PRISONS LADIES

Bottom placed Fabulous Ladies will on Sunday bring to an end a very frustrating campaign that has resulted in the demotion of one of Ghana’s illustrious female football clubs in history. Fabulous Ladies take on Prisons Ladies in the fixture of the 2022/2023 season at the Bantama Kokooase Park. Fabulous Ladies fought tooth and nail to avoid relegation but didn’t succeed in their quest to stay up as they finished in the bottom two. Prisons Ladies on the other hand have a chance to make it into the top 4 as they lie in 7th place with 24 points. The result in this fixture will benefit only Prisons Ladies because a win for them might give them a chance of finishing in the top 4, with Fabulous Ladies already relegated alongside Candy Soccer Academy.

PEARLPIA LADIES VRS NORTHERN LADIES

Last season, Pearlpia Ladies missed out on the top spot to Ampem Darkoa Ladies on the last day of the season after an excruciating defeat at home. The Tamale side will be out again looking to make their first appearance in the Women’s Premier League play off as they aim for a win against rivals Northern Ladies. The regional derby will take place at the Aliu Mahama Sports stadium in Tamale as we draw the curtains on the 2022/2023 season. Again what makes this week encounter a crucial one is that any of the two teams has the chance to win the Northern Zone if Ampem Darkoa Ladies slip up at home. Northern Ladies won the reverse encounter 4:0 and appears to be favorites taking into consideration the current run of form. Pearlpia Ladies have been inconsistent in recent weeks dropping points at home whilst the visitors boast of two wins, one draw and loss in their last four matches.

TAMALE SUPER LADIES VRS SUPREME LADIES

Debutants Tamale Super Ladies have escaped relegation with 20 points and look set for another spell in the top tier League after finishing above the bottom two places in the League table. They host contenders Supreme Ladies who would look to get all the maximum points and rely on results in the other games to win the zone. They lie 5th with 26 points and a good result could push them to a top four spot or a shot at the title.

DREAMZ LADIES VRS CANDY SOCCER ACADEMY

The Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League will be climaxed this weekend at various centres and the Bantama Kookoase Astro turf will witness the match between third placed Dreamz Ladies and relegated Candy Soccer Academy Ladies. Dreamz Ladies will be going into the game on the back of an emphatic away victory against Prisons Ladies last weekend. Whiles Candy Soccer Ladies were also held to a stalemate against Tamale Super Ladies. Depending on other results, Dreamz Ladies could be title contenders if they win their game. This is a dead rubber for Candy Soccer Academy after finishing bottom in the zone following their promotion this season.

AMPEM DARKOA LADIES VRS ASHTOWN LADIES

League leaders and champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies will host Kumasi based Ash town Ladies at the Ohene Ameyaw Park in Techiman on Monday. This is a crucial encounter as a win for Ampem Darkoa grants them the top spot. But Ashtown Ladies would need other results to go their way even if they beat the champions. The host lost 3:2 in their last match against Supreme Ladies whilst Ashtown Ladies annihilated contenders, Pearlpia Ladies 3:0 at home. Ampem Darkoa Ladies are at the summit of the league table with 28 points whilst Ashtown lie in 6th place with 26 points.
