Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC have parted company with their South African head coach Pitso Mosimane following a mutual termination.

The decision to part ways was reached on Monday following a meeting held by Al Ahly president Mahmoud El Khatib, chairman Yassin Mansour, board member Hossam Ghaly and other members of the club’s planning committee.

The meeting was held in relation to the defeat in this season’s CAF Champions League final to Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca.

The two parties decided to split just three months after renewing their contract for two years which was supposed to expire in 2024.

According to a statement released by the club following Monday’s meeting, Al Ahly were keen on continuing the journey with Mosimane but that the former South Africa boss requested to leave the club.

“During the meeting, they all decided that he should continue his mission with Al Ahly as a result of the achievements he managed to accomplish,” the Al Ahly statement said.

“However, during [a] meeting that was previously held, Mosimane requested to leave.

“Mosimane’s decision was discussed and it was decided to approve his request to part ways with the club.”

Mosimane led the Egyptian powerhouse to two CAF Champions League triumphs after joining in 2020 from South African club Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 57-year-old won two consecutive bronze prizes at the Club World Cup, including the 2021 edition which was held in February this year.

Assistant coach Samy Komsan has been appointed to lead the club on an interim basis until a new head is hired.
