This season has shown the flaws of many teams in the world and mostly affected the ‘big teams’ in the likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool, Juventus, Barcelona etc.
The Spanish Super Cup saw Athletic Bilbao facing Real Madrid in the semifinal where they triumphed at the end of proceedings. Bilbao won in open play by 2-1 as Real Madrid and their manager had no answers to their dynamics.
Winning over Real Madrid meant them meeting FC Barcelona in the cup final and many wrote off Bilbao as Barcelona were beginning to pick up their stride in the Spanish Laliga with their talisman Messi showing promise with goal scoring and more assists.
Athletic Bilbao came prepared with the mindset of winners. They started the game with confidence and it paid off. Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring for Barcelona and Bilbao quickly equalized, Griezmann added a second and Bilbao rapidly responded.
The cup tie could be settled in normal time and had to go the extended period. Close to the end of the entire 120’, Inaki Williams grabbed a winner for Athletic Bilbao and kept their hope of winning their first trophy alive.
Time sure moved very fast as Lionel Messi in the cup tie picked up his first ever club red card after VAR detected violent play from the Argentine and Barcelona magician.
